Carats are the standard measurement system for Diamond weight.
In the mining process various sized Diamonds are discovered; smaller stones being found more frequently than larger ones. As Diamonds are a natural stone, the properties of these precious gems cannot be controlled.
Diamond weight is important in determining a Diamond's value. Larger carat sizes are very rare and of extremely high value. However, it is imperative to point out that two Diamonds of equal weight can have very unequal values - depending on their quality. It is also important to recognise that Diamond weight does not always indicate size. Depending on the Cut (or proportions) two diamonds weighing the same may appear very different in size.
1 carat is equal to 0.2 grams
Carats are then further divided into 100 points -
0.50 carrots = ½ carat = 50 points
